Is Your Office Paper Destroying Australia’s Native Forests?

Turn now towards your office copy machine and laser printer and ask yourself  “what brand of copy and laser paper do we buy for the office?”

Why would I ask you to think about your office copy or laser paper?  Because you may be really shocked and upset to know that some companies of copy and laser paper brands are cutting down our Australian native forests for our office paper.

Yesterday I was invited by the NSW Wilderness Society to photograph ‘behind the scenes’ their protest against Reflex (one such company who are destroying our Australian Native Wilderness).

The protest theme was ‘Victoria Secret’ i.e. what Reflex is doing in Victoria is a secret to most people.  Men and women protesters, dressed as Victoria Secret models so to draw attention to a story that really needs to be told here in Australia.

In case you were wondering these are the office and copy papers that The Wilderness Society recommends:

1) Evelve (Business & Office A4 and A3)

2) Vision (Pure White, 100% A4 and A3 + 10 colours)

3) Fuji Xerox Recycled Supreme A4 and A3 + 5 pastel colours)

4) Office Works (100% recycled A4)

Enjoy the photographs (yes you can have a laugh as I sure did – who said saving Australia’s Native Forests couldn’t be fun?).  To view more Wilderness Society protest photographs, check out the Sarhn McArthur Photography’s Facebook page.

Photographing Ghosts at Sydney Town Hall

Arriving very early for my corporate photography job at the Sydney Town Hall, I took some time to wonder around the venue.

Noticing the photographic camera gear hanging over my shoulders, one of the Sydney Town Hall staff asked “as a photographer, are you of the opinion that there are ghosts in the lifts?”  “Sorry” is all I could manage to reply, as I was certain I couldn’t have heard correctly.

The man repeated himself as four other staff members joined our conversation.  Apparently there have been professional photographers who have previously taken images in the Sydney Town Hall lifts, only to discover ‘strange’ unexplained lights on their photographs.

I couldn’t help myself and hence headed off to investigate – not sure if it was because I wanted to know why professional photographers would be photographing in the lifts or because of the warning given “you will be freaked out if you go in the lifts”.

In hindsight, it is interesting that it wasn’t until I found myself inside the lift and taking the photograph that it occurred to me this could be a practical joke; played out on every unexpecting professional photographer who was unfortunate enough to be working that night.

With that thought I warned the Porter who showed me into the lift “you hold the door open for me while I take this photograph…………..if this door closes I will scream very loudly”.  Yes I was a little freaked out by all their talk of ghosts (I really am very chicken).

Were there ghosts in the lifts?  Well apart from freaking myself out, I didn’t see anything unusual and my photograph didn’t appear odd.  However I am happy to leave the judgment to you.

Below is that ‘Sydney Town Hall lift’ photograph.  Also included are Sydney Town Hall Venue layout images, captured from the corporate function (which is why I was there in the first place and not to ghost hunt).

To finish, I wanted to say that from a photographer’s point of view, this venue is gorgeous for photography.  If you are organising a large corporate function or wedding, I recommend you take a look at the Sydney Town Hall (and say hello to the ghost in the lift for me).

The Secret to Capturing Pregnant Portraits?

I believe that a good people photographer may only need 10% technical photographic skills but must have 90% great people skills.

The ability to walk in a room and make people feel comfortable and relaxed is a skill I don’t remember learning at the Queensland College of Art – Griffith University.  No I learnt it in life.

The ability to help your client relax while they are in front of the camera, is essential in all people photography and especially important in capturing portraits of pregnant woman.

With the permission of one of my recent clients (thanks Danielle), here are two of my favourite photographs captured from her pregnant portrait photography session with me.

The portraits were taken in the privacy of Danielle’s home, with mostly natural light used – just a hint of fill flash.

I love the feeling of these photographs.

European white Christmas & the Mediterranean adventure photographs

I’m back!

For over 20 years, it was my dream to experience a white Christmas.  It was really special to be in Rothenberg, Germany on Christmas day, while watching the snow fall.  I believe it was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

Thought you might like to see some of my photographs.

I have added more photographs on the Sarhn McArthur Photography Facebook page.
